Before & After: Backyard Drainage Transformation in Aledo, TX

When we first visited this Aledo, TX homeowner's backyard, the problem was immediately obvious. After every rain — even a moderate one — the entire rear third of the yard turned into standing water that took days to drain. The clay soil in Parker County held the moisture like a bowl, and the yard sloped slightly toward the house rather than away from it. The homeowner was watching their lawn die in large soggy patches and was worried about foundation damage.
The Problem: Chronic Standing Water and Foundation Risk
Our assessment revealed three compounding issues: a negative slope toward the house foundation, a low point in the yard with no natural exit for water, and compacted clay soil with almost no drainage capacity. The homeowner had tried aerating and top-dressing, but those surface-level fixes couldn't solve a grading and drainage infrastructure problem. The lawn was showing signs of fungal disease from chronic moisture, and the wood fence posts were beginning to rot at the base.
The Solution: French Drain + Regrading + Sod
We designed a two-part solution: first, a 65-foot French drain system that ran along the back fence line and exited through the side yard to the street. Second, we brought in fill dirt and regraded the rear portion of the yard to create a positive slope of approximately 3% away from the foundation. After the grading work settled, we installed Bermuda sod over the entire restored area and added topsoil to improve the soil profile.
The Result
Within the next three storms after installation, the homeowner reported that the standing water problem was completely resolved. The yard now drains within two to four hours after rain, the Bermuda sod established fully within six weeks of installation, and the foundation area remains dry. The total project cost was approximately $6,800 for the French drain, grading, and sod installation combined — a fraction of what foundation repairs would have cost if the drainage problem had continued uncorrected.
